New Car Rules in Northern Ireland. Here's What You Need to Know
If you're thinking about buying a new car in 2026, it's worth taking a few minutes to get up to speed on some changes that came into force at the start of the year.
It's one of those things that hasn't had a lot of coverage, but it could affect what's available to you and what you end up paying
What's Changed?
New cars sold in Northern Ireland now need to meet EU type approval standards. This is separate from the GB approval that covers England, Scotland and Wales. Some manufacturers have applied for both, which means they can sell the same models right across the UK. Others have chosen GB approval only for now.
Brands including Vauxhall, Renault, Peugeot and Nissan currently fall into that second group. It simply means some of their models aren't available as new cars in Northern Ireland now.
How Is It Affecting Things on the Ground?
The impact is already showing up in the numbers. Vauxhall, one of the most popular brands on NI roads, saw retail sales rise 16% in Great Britain last year. Over the same period, sales here in Northern Ireland fell by 59%.
For anyone who drives through a Motability Scheme, it's also worth knowing that some vehicles on the scheme may no longer be available in Northern Ireland. The scheme has said it will still offer plenty of alternatives, so it's worth speaking to your dealer about what's open to you.
Most of Us Haven't Heard About This Yet
Research from CompareNI.com asked 700 Northern Ireland drivers about the new rules.
Worth Knowing
79% of NI drivers said they were confused about what the new rules mean for them. That's nearly 8 in every 10 people. So if this is the first you're hearing about it, you're in good company.
Of those surveyed, 64% said their biggest concern was higher vehicle costs, while 18% were most worried about having fewer models to choose from.
What Does It Mean for Used Car Buyers?
These changes only apply to new cars. But it's natural that if new car supply tightens here, more people will look at the used car market instead. That's something we're keeping a close eye on at Used Cars NI.
We work with trusted dealers right across Northern Ireland, and our job is always to help you find the right car for your life and your budget. That doesn't change regardless of what's happening in the new car market.
Is Anything Being Done About It?
The UK Government has said it plans to make dual approval mandatory for manufacturers, which would mean NI buyers having access to the same choice of new cars as everyone else in the UK. That would be a positive step for drivers and dealers here alike.
The legislation isn't in place just yet, but it's something worth keeping an eye on if you're planning a new car purchase in the months ahead.
In the meantime, if you have any questions about your options, our team is always happy to help point you in the right direction.
