Renault 5 E Tech Electric Crowned UK Car of the Year 2026

The Renault 5 E‑Tech electric has achieved a major milestone after being named UK Car of the Year 2026, securing the top accolade in the annual UKCOTY Awards. The all‑electric supermini had already collected the Small Car of the Year title earlier in the competition, setting the stage for its decisive overall victory.

A Clear Winner Among Category Champions

More than 30 seasoned automotive journalists from across the UK took part in the judging process, selecting standout vehicles across multiple categories before voting on the ultimate winner. Having already impressed in the small car class, the Renault 5 E‑Tech electric triumphed once again in the final round, emerging as the judges’ favourite among the pool of category winners.

Co‑chairman of the UK Car of the Year Awards and editor of UK Driver magazine, John Challen, praised the car’s unique combination of nostalgic charm and modern capability.
“With its retro styling, the new Renault 5 tugs at the heart strings of those drivers who experienced the original,” Challen said. “By adding an immensely fun and entertaining drive, desirability and affordability to that nostalgic element, the French favourite pulled off a resounding victory to be crowned UK Car of the Year 2026.”

Blending Retro Design With Modern Technology

The Renault 5 E‑Tech electric has quickly positioned itself as one of the most significant new EVs to reach the UK market. Judges highlighted its ability to merge iconic styling cues with contemporary engineering, delivering a balance of everyday efficiency, user‑friendly technology, and an engaging driving experience. These qualities have resonated strongly with both retail and fleet customers.

Adam Wood, Managing Director of Renault UK, expressed pride in the achievement.
“With so many experienced automotive journalists voting for R5 as the UK Car of the Year, the award is something we’re very proud of,” he said. “It has really hit the spot with retail and fleet customers, and with 2026 being the first full year of sales, plus it being one of the very few EVs to qualify for the full £3,750 Electric Car Grant, R5 is well on its way to being a very common sight on our roads.”
