45 Years of Trust, Heritage and Land Rover in Dungannon
How Donnelly Group grew from a local showroom into Northern Ireland’s largest privately owned motor retailer—without losing sight of the community that shaped it.
In 1981, Terence Donnelly OBE opened the doors of a showroom on St. George’s Street in Dungannon with a straightforward ambition: to offer local motorists quality vehicles and service they could depend on. Forty-five years later, that promise still sits at the heart of Donnelly Group, even as the family business has expanded far beyond its original footprint.
The anniversary is also a celebration of an equally enduring relationship: 45 years with Land Rover. The partnership has accompanied Donnelly Group through decades of change in both the motor industry and the lives of its customers, helping the company build a reputation for capability, premium quality and personal service.
A partnership built to last
For Donnelly Group, the Land Rover relationship is more than a franchise agreement. It is part of the company’s identity in Dungannon and a thread running through its wider growth across Northern Ireland.
“Strong partnerships are built over time, and our relationship with Land Rover is a great example of that,” says Terence Donnelly OBE, Executive Chairman at Donnelly Group. “For decades, we’ve worked together to provide clients with vehicles that combine capability, performance and premium quality.
“The longevity of the partnership reflects the shared values that have underpinned its success and contributed to the continued growth of Donnelly Group in Dungannon.”
The scale of that achievement is recognised by JLR’s UK leadership. Cian O’Brien, Managing Director, JLR (UK), describes reaching 45 years as “a remarkable achievement” and a reflection of Donnelly Group’s commitment to customers and communities across Northern Ireland.
“For more than four decades, Donnelly Group has been a trusted Land Rover partner, building strong local relationships and delivering exceptional service for generations of customers,” he says.
“On behalf of everyone at JLR, I congratulate Terence, the Donnelly family and the wider team on this milestone, and we look forward to continuing to serve local clients together for many years to come.”
From St. George’s Street to Moy Road
The company’s physical journey mirrors its commercial one. Donnelly Group began trading in Dungannon on St. George’s Street in 1981, before relocating its local operations to the current Moy Road site in 1991 as the business expanded.
That site has continued to evolve. Over the past decade, Donnelly Group has invested more than £15 million in its Dungannon operation. More recently, it has added four showrooms to its premium-brand portfolio in the space of 12 months—evidence of continued confidence in the location and in the customers it serves.
Today, Donnelly Group employs more than 585 people across Northern Ireland. Its network comprises nine showrooms and represents 23 leading manufacturers, placing the company at the centre of a motor retail landscape that has transformed dramatically since its early days.
Generations of customers
Growth, however, is only part of the anniversary story. The more enduring measure is the trust carried from one generation to the next. Customers who first encountered Donnelly Group decades ago now return with children and grandchildren of their own, giving the business a rare continuity.
“When we opened the doors on St. George’s Street 45 years ago, we were focused on providing local people with quality vehicles and a level of service they could rely on,” Terence says. “While the business has grown significantly since then, those fundamentals haven’t changed.
“Over the past four and a half decades, we’ve had the privilege of serving generations of local customers. Many of the families who visit us today at Moy Road have longstanding connections with Donnelly Group, and that loyalty and trust is something we never take for granted.”
Keeping pace with a changing industry
Across four and a half decades, motorists’ expectations have shifted, vehicle technology has advanced and the retail experience has been reshaped. Through those changes, Donnelly Group has continued to balance investment and expansion with the local focus on which it was founded.
“While the motor industry has evolved considerably over the years, our commitment to delivering excellent service and supporting our local community has remained constant,” Terence says. “We are incredibly grateful to our customers, colleagues and partners who have been part of our story, and we look forward to continuing to serve motorists across the region for many years to come.”
The milestone therefore looks in two directions at once. It honours 45 years of shared history with Land Rover and the people of Dungannon, while signalling a company still prepared to invest, adapt and grow.
A Northern Ireland success story
Donnelly Group is Northern Ireland’s largest privately owned vehicle retailer, selling and leasing new and used cars, vans and 4x4s. Across its nine showrooms, it offers vehicles from 23 manufacturers.
Its locations include Bangor, Ballymena, Belfast, Derry/Londonderry, Dungannon, Eglinton, Enniskillen and Mallusk. The breadth of that network may show how far the business has travelled, but the anniversary in Dungannon is a reminder of where a defining chapter began—and why its original emphasis on service, relationships and community still matters.
