Ohme introduces PayPal instalment option for home EV chargers

Ohme has introduced a new payment option that allows customers buying its home EV chargers directly to spread the cost through PayPal Pay in 3, as the company looks to lower the upfront barrier to switching to electric driving.

The move comes as electric vehicles account for more than one in five new car sales in the UK this year, increasing demand for affordable home-charging options.

Under the arrangement, customers buying an Ohme ePod or Home Pro charger from the company can use PayPal’s flexible payment options, including Pay in 3, which splits the purchase into three interest-free payments over two months. The checkout also includes access to PayPal+, whose rewards programme allows enrolled users to earn points on eligible purchases.

David Watson, chief executive of Ohme, said the new option would give customers another way to finance a charger purchase and could help accelerate the shift to cheaper home charging for EV drivers.

“It’s great to be able to offer buyers an additional route to buying an Ohme charger, by spreading the cost with PayPal,” Watson said. “With petrol prices being so high, there’s never been a better time to drive an EV and PayPal’s Pay in 3 option will help more drivers to get faster access to cheaper and cleaner home charging.”

Tamer El-Emary, general manager for PayPal UK, said flexible payment options could help consumers who see the initial cost of home charging as a hurdle when moving to an electric vehicle.

“Many drivers are choosing to switch to an electric vehicle, but for some the upfront cost of getting set up at home can feel like a sticking point. That’s exactly where flexible payment options can make a difference,” El-Emary said. “By partnering with Ohme, we’re helping to remove a friction point between buying an EV and actually benefiting from the budget-friendly running costs that come with home charging. We hope that offering our flexible payment options will help Ohme to continue to grow.”

Ohme said a typical driver using one of its chargers at home with a smart tariff such as Intelligent Octopus Go at 8p/kWh could cut running costs to less than £12 a month for 6,800 miles a year, compared with more than £90 a month for a petrol car over the same distance.

The company is the official charger provider in the UK and Ireland for brands including Mercedes-Benz, Volvo Cars and Volkswagen Group, and also works with Genesis, Hyundai, Kia PBV, Smart, Suzuki and XPeng in the UK. Ohme is also the exclusive charger provider for Motability customers and has additional partnerships with Ford in Ireland and Hyundai in France.
