The Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, is evolving into even more of a motoring mecca in 2019. Changes to the physical layout, with the relocation of the road car paddocks, will make way for an all-new live action arena guaranteed to thrill spectators. The four-day Festival, this year taking place on 4-7 July, is always looking to the future in making sure the newest and most exciting cars, bikes and technologies are very much part of the mix.

Welshman Tom Cave took his first British Rally Championship win in a four-wheel-drive car on the West Cork Rally last weekend (16/17 March). Along with co-driver James Morgan, the pair won the event by a mere 4.8 seconds in their Hyundai i20 R5 from reigning champion Matt Edwards (Ford Fiesta R5) in second, while defending Irish Tarmac champion Josh Moffett (Ford Fiesta R5) rounded out the podium. Cave’s win was the first BRC win for the Korean manufacturer Hyundai since David Higgins in 2004.

Arguably the worlds most important motor show, the Geneva International Motor Show held at the Palexpo Convention Centre right beside the airport didn’t fail to disappoint again for 2019. We flew direct from Belfast International airport to Geneva, and by taking the 6am red-eye were in and out in a day. The message from the manufacturers this year wasn’t unexpected: we’re going electric.

Saturday 16 March saw the SW Adair Tyres Northern Ireland Sprint Championship visit Kirkistown as the 500MRCI hosted the second round of the 2019 Sprint Championship. Heavy rain overnight cast an early doubt over the event as the only people relishing the conditions were the family of ducks who had taken up residence at the approach to Colonial.
