Launched almost thirty years ago the Honda CR-V is an incredibly popular sight on our roads and now in its sixth generation has increased its green credentials significantly with a e:PHEV plug-in hybrid powertrain.
I have driven a few CR-V models over the years and the thing that always impresses most is how spacious they are both within the cabin as well as the vast luggage capacity in the boot. A few years ago, ahead of a family trip with double buggy and two travel cots, we borrowed one for the trip and it surpassed all expectations with its load ability.
This latest model is no different in that respect, but on the road the physical size of the CR-V in noticeably greater. Despite cars increasing in size, especially over the last decade, parking spaces haven’t had that same spread in waistline and its noticeable when parking something like Honda’s CR-V.
Available as a four-wheel-drive self-charging hybrid, or a plug-in hybrid as pictured and tested, the latest CR-V is packed with a generous amount of equipment as standard.
The e:HEV model starts from £45,930 and is available in two trims. The ‘Elegance’ model, and an ‘Advance’ which starts from £49,030. The range topping e:PHEV starts from a whopping £53,995 and is the model I’ll discuss.
Key features of the e:PHEV include:
Bold Design – “The new CR-V is our largest premium SUV yet. A new mesh grille design, striking alloy wheels, streamlined LED headlights with sequential turn signals and distinctive rear light design, make it a powerful presence on the road.”
Plug-in Charging – “When using a public AC charging station, it can take approximately 2.5 hours to charge the 17.7kWh battery from 0-100% using the 6.8kW AC charger. Giving a range of 50 miles on battery power.”
Modern Interior – “The CR-V’s interior has a sophisticated and modern feel. The uncluttered dash design gives a wider view while driving, while the infotainment screen, buttons and controls, are all placed within easy access for the driver.”
Remote Connectivity – “The My Honda+ App keeps you fully connect to the CR-V. Check fuel and charge levels, set the climate control or check to see if doors/windows are closed and locked all from your Smartphone.”
Featuring a large battery for longer commutes, the e:PHEV Honda CR-V can achieve a zero emission driving range of 50 miles in EV mode, with ultra-low overall emissions from 19gm/km of C02.
Acting more as a generator in assisting the battery is a 2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine, which gives a combined output of 184 PS and 335Nm of torque, allowing a 0-62mph dash in 9.4 seconds with a maximum speed of 121mph.
A combined return of 353mpg is claimed with a fully charged battery. When the battery is completely depleted, these figures will only increase marginally as the vehicle seamlessly becomes a traditional hybrid.
Drive modes change the vehicle set-up automatically to best harness the drive experience, these are: Sport, Normal, Econ, and Snow. The e:PHEV also features a fifth mode, Tow, which assists with charge management when towing up to 1,500kg. There is also the EV mode for low-speed town driving.
Honda SENSING 360 (collision mitigation braking system, lane change collision mitigation system, active lane change assist, front cross traffic warning, and cornering speed assist), LED lights, power tailgate, panoramic glass roof, front and rear parking sensors, and a rear-view camera, Honda CONNECT, keyless entry and starts, digital driver’s display, wireless phone charger, and heated front seats feature as standard on all CR-V models.
The sole e:PHEV trim, an ‘Advance Tech’ adds adaptive driving beam, multi view camera, Honda parking pilot, heated leather steering wheels, drivers seat power adjustment with memory, head up display, active cornering lights, adaptive driving beam, and finally My Honda+.
Styling enhancements on the Advance Tech also include body-colour trim, black gloss detailing, 18-inch berlina black alloy wheels, and sporty grille design. Inside, it receives sports pedals and dark coloured roof lining. The e:PHEV also features a BOSE premium audio system which sounds fantastic.
Keeping you connected is important and alongside a 10.2-inch digital screen behind the steering wheel, the central 9-inch touchscreen seamlessly links you to your favorite apps via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Comfort and quality is right up there with the price tag. Honda focussing on a smooth, relaxed, and quiet driving experience rather than one that is rushed. Something that is reflected in the CR-V’s power, which is significantly less than some similarly priced rivals.
With this latest CR-V, Honda have retained a very strong rival to Toyota’s RAV4 and BMW’s X3.
