Hilltown driving ace Tony Greenan beats all expectations on his home event at Bishopscourt Racing Circuit by smashing lap record during Formula BOSS Ireland’s two-day visit to the County Down venue.
The 44-year-old businessman who operates T Greenan Tyres in Castlewellan has proved in recent years that it’s not just tyres he knows about, but driving, too, having been crowned Formula Boss Ireland champion last season.
Taking a commanding championship victory in his 2015 Dallara Formula 3 with a Mercedes-based HWA built engine, Greenan set the bar high. And ahead of the championships visit to Bishopscourt this year, the pressure was on from his peers and sports commentators.
It was well talked about around the paddock, that if the stars aligned and conditions permitted a significant push, that Greenan could break the outright four-wheel lap record around the circuit in the former Alex Albon car.
Having covered Tony’s career from almost the start, I knew the Hilltown driver was capable of coming close, but he done it in a way to prove who’s BOSS!
On his two race wins and smashing the lap record, Tony Greenan commented, “Absolutely delighted to add another outright lap record to this car. Really enjoyed the battle in race one with Martin Daly he and his family should be super proud of his performance.
“Even with the low entry’s it was a fantastic weekend. I’m sure we will have a bigger grid at Kirkistown next month where Formula BOSS Ireland will put on another great show.”
Formula BOSS Ireland commented, “Following a very successful return to Bishopscourt race circuit with Tony Greenan breaking the car lap record 5 times on his way to 2 victories, our thanks to the BOSS competitors who entered the race, to Gary Manning and his team for organising the event and to all the BOSS supporters who turned up, the craic was mighty.
“The only downside being the small numbers of cars that turned out. Despite this the organisers want us to return in 2025.”
Heading into the event, the lap record stood at 1.03.500 around the 1.833 mile circuit, a time which was set in 2019 by Paul O’Connell.
In race one, Greenan set a new record of 1.02.578, achieved on the penultimate lap. In race two, Greenan surpassed all expectation and sliced a smidge more off this by setting another new record of 1.02.358 on lap three.
Runner-up on both races at Bishopscourt was Martin Daly in his Dallara World Series Renault. Rounding off the rostrum in race one was Daniel Faherty with his Dallara F3. Whilst Noel Robinson made-up the podium in race two driving an F3 Dallara borrowed from Stanley Watson.
